The Holocaust was not just the greatest murder in history; it was also
the greatest theft of art in history. This dramatic film recounts the
decades long struggle by Maria Altmann, born and raised in Austria, to
recover five Gustav Klimt paintings stolen from her family by the Nazis
in 1938, and which have been hanging in the Austrian National Gallery
since 1945. This screening is sponsored by the Association of Jewish Refugees Monday 3 March 8.45pmJellyfishICA, The Mall, London SW1Y 5AH
Jellyfish led the way among a crop of Israeli features attracting the
critics’ attention at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year,
taking home the prestigious Golden Camera award. An understated,
beautifully shot tale of interconnecting lives in modern-day Tel Aviv,
the film uses the sea to great effect, though its meditative tone is
balanced by some sharp humour courtesy of writer-director team Geffen
and Keret. Already successful authors in Israel, they can add another
string to their bow with this accomplished feature film debut.
